Archive Internship

Job Description:

Do you enjoy the photo and textual displays in museums? These eye-catching exhibits are designed by a team of professionals. They use many archives to enhance the visitor experience. You can help us manage our current archive collection and help us grow the community donated material. Our collection is managed by PastPerfect and is accessible online at:

We are located off the historic PCH and Jamboree Road. Visit our museum to learn more about these exciting opportunities. We are open to the public on Tuesdays- Sundays from 10am-4pm.

Description of Tasks:

During this internship, you will learn how to process documents, archival management, and help us create public history projects.


Students will have the opportunity to learn archival methods. We process our donations with an accession form and import the data into the PastPerfect museum software system. This data is available online for researchers and those interested in the catalog. We will use this data to create new exhibits and update our current signage as we learn more about the community.

Learning Outcomes:

This on-site training will enhance students’ academic and professional portfolio. They will understand historic site operations and receive public history training. Our archive will offer them an opportunity to gain experience with cataloging and working with the public to share this information.

Education Internship

The Balboa Island Museum & Historical Society is partnering with Boy & Girl Scouts to offer dynamic education programming. Help us offer these group activities and create new badge fulfillment opportunities.


-Set-up interactive stations

-Provide site tours and assist with programs

-Research local history to help create new programs


-Work with our museum staff to learn the local history.

-You will have access to our archive to help identify new objects to help with our programming.

-You’ll interact with our docent team to learn additional stories of life on Balboa Island.


-You will learn to research, develop, and deliver dynamic education programming to small groups.

Oral History Internship

You can get involved with our “Over the Bridge” Oral History Project:


-Assist our oral history team with filming, editing, and transcription of each interview.


-We interview candidates on Tuesdays and edit this content for our media station.

Learning: You will learn oral history best practices and receive hands-on training will technology. We will make the video archive, transcripts, and photos available to the public as we complete each interview.

Historic Homes Internship

If a Balboa Island house is 60+ years old, built prior to 1953, it qualifies to be recognized as a historic home. You can order and display a plaque engraved with the words “Balboa Island Historical Society” and the date that the house was built. There are currently 145 plaque holders on the Island. Help us document these significant histories.


-You will become familiar with our local homes and history of each property.


-Help us document and upload content to our digital portfolio of houses participating in our plaque program:

We also have a HistoryPin page where we upload these digital photos and create virtual tours. (!photos/list/).


-You will understand historic preservation standards and how community retain the physical past in public spaces.
