BAL WEEK: WHEN BALBOA TURNED UP THE VOLUME
From the late 1920s to the 1960s, Balboa Island & Peninsula weren’t sleepy beach towns—they were the Spring Break capitals of the West Coast.

🏖️ Bal Week brought high school and college students from all over, packing cottages with 20–30 friends, dancing in the streets, and throwing all-day, all-night parties.

🎺 At sunset, everyone made their way to the Rendezvous Ballroom, where big bands and future legends like Tommy Dorsey, Benny Goodman, Les Brown, and a young Dick Dale brought the house down.

🔥 By the late '50s, Dale’s surf rock shook the walls, making him a Bal Week staple.

🎶 “When night fell, this was the place to be,” said bandleader Freddie Gray.

Eventually, the party moved inland—Palm Springs, the river—but Balboa’s golden chaos still lives on.

🪖 Our Vietnam Veterans hold a powerful place on the walls of the Balboa Island Museum — stories of courage, sacrifice, and brotherhood that deserve to be seen, heard, and remembered.

Bill Stewart, a WWII and Korean War veteran, also visited the museum and shared some of his own handiwork — from detailed rope work to his carved whale’s tooth, both proudly on display. His legacy, and those of his fellow veterans, bring the exhibit to life in ways no textbook ever could.

📍 Newport Bay, 1980s

🎡 Remember this iconic riverboat-style structure?

The Reuben E. Lee was more than just a restaurant—it was a Newport Beach landmark, floating proudly just off PCH between Dover Drive and Bayside Drive.

🛳️ Built to resemble a 19th-century paddle wheel steamer, this three-story beauty once hosted fine dining, live music, and waterfront views you couldn’t beat.

👉 In 1995, it was renamed “The Pride of Newport”, and eventually became the floating home of the Newport Harbor Nautical Museum—a space dedicated to maritime history and local seafaring heritage.

⛴️ Sadly, after years of service, she was retired and dismantled in the 2000s. But to this day, locals remember her festive bunting, striped walkways, and unmatched charm.

This rare aerial photo captures more than just the coastline—it shows a hidden part of American history built right here in Orange County. 🇺🇸⚓

During WWII, Newport Beach became a major shipbuilding hub. From the very spot you're looking at—near Newport Pier—local shipyards built vital Navy and Army vessels that served across the globe.

📍 South Coast Shipyard (Established 1938)
Located at 2300 Newport Blvd, this yard constructed auxiliary motor minesweepers (YMS) and air-sea rescue boats. It operated through the war and remained open until 1963.

📍 The Peyton Company
Based at 901 Pacific Coast Hwy, Peyton built Army harbor tugboats and submarine chasers for the U.S. Navy. It played a key role in wartime logistics before closing in 1945.

📍 Ackerman Boat Company
Started in 1943 by Clarence Ackerman at 151 Shipyard Way, this yard specialized in landing craft and tugboats for the war. It changed hands post-war and operated until 1958.

📍 Victory Shipbuilding Corporation
Founded in 1942 at 615 Coast Highway, this company produced wooden tugboats and towboats for both the Navy and Army. It closed after fulfilling its military contracts in the mid-1940s.

During WWII, Newport Beach became a major shipbuilding hub. From the very spot you're looking at—near Newport Pier—local shipyards built vital Navy and Army vessels that served across the globe.

📍 South Coast Shipyard (Established 1938)
Located at 2300 Newport Blvd, this yard constructed auxiliary motor minesweepers (YMS) and air-sea rescue boats. It operated through the war and remained open until 1963.

📍 The Peyton Company
Based at 901 Pacific Coast Hwy, Peyton built Army harbor tugboats and submarine chasers for the U.S. Navy. It played a key role in wartime logistics before closing in 1945.

📍 Ackerman Boat Company
Started in 1943 by Clarence Ackerman at 151 Shipyard Way, this yard specialized in landing craft and tugboats for the war. It changed hands post-war and operated until 1958.

📍 Victory Shipbuilding Corporation
Founded in 1942 at 615 Coast Highway, this company produced wooden tugboats and towboats for both the Navy and Army. It closed after fulfilling its military contracts in the mid-1940s.

In 1963, the Balboa Island Sculling & Punting Society made waves by launching the groundbreaking ‘Long Beach & Avalon, Ephemeral & Western Railroad’—America’s first transoceanic railway.

With meticulous preparation, a vintage 1914 Pullman car was carefully loaded onto a barge in Long Beach, stocked with all necessities for the 24-hour voyage—EXCEPT toilet paper! 🧻 Luckily, it was delivered via plane.

A ceremonial golden spike marked the arrival at Avalon in Catalina Island.
